English Language Arts Curriculum
My Vision for Instruction:
In 5th ELA classes, our scholars are growing in their abilities to closely read, analyze, critically think about, and appreciate a variety of informational and literary texts. Daily students are given authentic opportunities to read, write, think and speak about texts and their conclusions. Scholars are digging deeply into texts to improve their understanding of the complexities of text styles, structures, content, and themes. Through examining and analyzing various genres, scholars are utilizing text-appropriate strategies to infer meaning, are constantly asking questions and thinking critically about universal themes, and considering how what they learn from texts applies to their own identity, community, and society, in an effort to learn how to make our world a better place. In 5th grade, this means first building a foundation in which they are learning active metacognitive reading comprehension strategies and how to approach any type of text thoughtfully.
Our wild readers always have a book in their hands, eager to engage in self-selected independent reading and to share a love of reading and an enthusiasm for book recommendations with their fellow reading community. Our readers and writers do the majority of the heavy lifting in class each day through critical scholarly discussion, rigorous and thoughtful writing, and close reading and text analysis grounded in textual evidence.
We will be covering 5th Grade Common Core Standards in Reading Informational Text, Reading Literature, Writing, and Language/ Grammar. To read the standards, click here.
